Bush Fauna & Flora | 2020

Urns of 2020: Rising from the Ashes
Curated by Liz Amalfi
Gaffa Gallery
281 Clarence Street Sydney 2000
10 - 21 December 2021

Bush Fauna and Flora
Bamboo Plywood
25 (H) x 18 (W) cm
CHARITY: Bush Heritage Australia

In 2020, I came across an interesting object-based brief by Liz Amalfi (funeral director supplier of IONICA) I really liked the intention of what Liz was trying to do. These works comment on the stability of our Australian environments and the bushfires in response to climate change. I have selected a total of twenty native faunas and floras to build surface patterns across the two forms. As a contemporary object-maker, I have chosen to re-construct the urn using these Australian motifs. Using a natural bamboo material that has incurred burnt edges references the metaphorical meanings associated with our bushfires. Through the act of making, the presentation of these works expresses impermanence, time and containment. I hope the visual language can make us think about the importance of our living environments.

My response to the brief received
2nd Prize Winner
