Lacquer Rises in the East

Lacquer Rises in the East: a Feeling for Culture
by Kevin Murray

In this article, Kevin surveys where lacquer is positioned in the modern world. He quotes, “Lacquer is a challenging material for contemporary jewelry. It doesn’t fit comfortably in the modernist framework”. His survey on China and Japan gives us insight to how this ancient medium is currently applied in jewellery. To be honest I have been a little out of touch with lacquer as my recent projects have deeply delved into metal. So it is nice reading this. It is nice to have a fresh perspective and to my surprise Kevin also mentions my work. Thank you Kevin!

I like Kevin’s point of view, “It’s rare to find lacquer used in the West. But Australia, a Western country in the Eastern hemisphere, sometimes produces hybrid cultural forms”.
